Which Version Of Office For Mac Is Compatible With Catalina: The Best Options

Hi! Thanks -- You are right, it is the 2011 version of Office... but 365 will require either a new purchase, or I fear, a "subscription", i.e. again an unnecessary $$. I do have a 365 license through work, but it is for online, so it's not very desirable, and won't work if I'm not in WiFi. I have to admit, I liked the old "buy and install" type of software... and useful things like envelopes or labels tools used to work better on the older versions. I wonder if I should go back to Mojave? Apple should really advise of the wreckage they do to software, printer drivers and other software (like film scanner drivers...) when they dramatically change OS. I now have 4 great Canon printers that don't work with my new M1 MacBook...

Starting with the November 2022 update (16.67) macOS Big Sur 11 or later is required receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Defender. If you continue with an older version of macOS, your Office apps will still work, but you'll no longer receive any updates including security updates.

For the best experience with macOS Catalina 10.15, be sure to keep your Office apps up-to-date. If the version of Office installed on your Mac is earlier than 16.16, and you are not being offered updates, you can download the latest Office for Mac suite installer. See About Office: What version of Office am I using?.

If you have an early version of Office for Mac 2016, you can update it at no charge. However note that connecting to Microsoft 365 services using Office 2016 for Mac is not supported by Microsoft after October 13, 2020. See: -us/office365/troubleshoot/administration/office-2016-for-mac-64-bit-upgrade

It would seem that your prior purchase was for an older 32 bit version of Office. Catalina now requires that only 64 bit apps be installed. Apple has regularly informed all of us for a couple of years that at some point our old 32 bit programs would no longer work with a future OS upgrade. The key question is which version of office do you have. If you have Microsoft Office for Mac 2016 or later, it can be updated at no cost. If it is an earlier version, it cannot be updated and you will be charged for an upgrade.

Microsoft Office has a 64 bit version available for use. A (32 bit version of Office 2011 or later, or one that is less updated, will not work with Catalina as described in the support document. Microsoft 365 and Office 2021 will run on macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra in addition to macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra. Microsoft will no longer be providing support for Office 2016 for the Mac after October 1, 2020. To continue using the Office app, it is necessary to upgrade to Big Sur. If you are using an older version of Mac OS X, you can still use your Office apps, but you will no longer receive security updates.

Microsoft 365 and Office 2021 will be supported by macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra, with Microsoft always attempting to maintain compatibility with the two previous versions of macOS (and future versions). Mac users will require at least 10GB of disk space.

Yes, Microsoft Office 2021 is compatible with macOS Catalina. You can install Office 2021 on any Mac running Catalina, and it will run just fine. There are no known compatibility issues with Catalina and Office 2021.

As of October 2019, Microsoft Office 2016 is not compatible with the Catalina operating system. Microsoft is aware of the issue and is working on a fix, but has not yet provided a timeline for when the fix will be released. In the meantime, users of Office 2016 on Catalina can continue to use the software, but may experience reduced functionality.

As of October 2019, Office for Mac 2011 is not compatible with macOS Catalina. Microsoft has not released an update to make Office for Mac 2011 compatible with macOS Catalina, and it is unclear if they will do so in the future. This means that users who upgrade to macOS Catalina will not be able to use Office for Mac 2011.

The latest version of Office for Mac is available via a Microsoft 365 subscription (from $69.99/59.99 per year or $6.99/5.99 per month). If you subscribe you benefit from the fact that you always receive the latest updates to the software, continuously, without the need of having to buy the whole program or suite again. The service, previously called Office 365, rebranded as Microsoft 365 in April 2020. Despite the name change and a bunch of upgrades at that time, the prices remain the same.

There is also Office Home & Business 2021 ($249.99/249.99) which is designed for families and small businesses who want the office apps Word, Excel, PowerPoint as well as Outlook. Read about Microsoft Office for Mac 2021 in our guide to the latest version of Office.

With Microsoft 365, customers pay monthly or yearly to always have the most up to date version of the software. There are various packages depending on whether you will be the only person using the software, if you will be sharing the subscription with friends and family, or if you are a small business or a larger enterprise.

Of course, there are plenty of disadvantages in this scenario too. Office 365 subscribers will benefit from new feature updates throughout those two years, meaning that you will miss out on some great new tools. You may benefit from technical support that you get with a 365 subscription. Perhaps you need to have access to the iOS and Android versions of the software. We have this article about getting Office apps for free on iPad.

latest releases of LibreOffice are 64-bit and thus will run on Mac OS X 10.15 (Catalina). Just go to Download LibreOffice LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Based on OpenOffice - Compatible with Microsoft and select the version you want (either 6.3.2 or 6.2.7).

If you need to run a 32-bit app, Apple unofficially recommends either that you keep an old Mac on hand that runs a pre-Catalina version of the OS or that you partition your current Mac so that it can start up with an older macOS version as well as Catalina. Both methods work, but both seem to me inconvenient and time consuming. There are, however, better alternatives.

The next page in the Assistant is headed macOS 10.14.6. Click the Install button. Parallels launches the macOS installer and creates a new virtual machine. When it's done, you see a screen asking you which language to use to interact with your virtual Mac. Choose your preferred language and continue.

Photoshop 20.0.7 and later versions work with macOS 10.15 (Catalina) but have these known compatibility issues. You may want to remain on your current version of macOS until these issues have been resolved.

So it sounds like you were using very old versions of Word and Excel that were 32-bit. Catalina only supports modern 64-bit apps. I did a video on this a while back: -to-do-about-32-bit-apps-before-updating-to-macos-catalina.html

So you need to update. You can use the current versions in the Mac App store with an Office 365 subscription. A regular one is $100 per year, and they have a personal subscription for only $70 per year. -us/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products-for-mac

If having Word and Excel aren't important enough to you to spend $70/year, then there are alternatives. You can just use Pages and Numbers, which you get for free with your Mac. Or, you can use Google Docs or Open Office or something else.

Les: Microsoft has been constantly upgrading the office suite. There are new versions out this year, including versions now distributed through the Mac App Store. The Quicken site shows Quicken 2019 for Mac, so it appears they are up-to-date as well. Just check the developer sites and you'll see.

I have tried to drag and drop files but Pages rejects them> I did, apparently, have an old version of Word that didn't work with the Catalina upgrade. This Word does not seem to have an "open in pages" option. It has "open" but that is just to open the file.

Before reading this I updated to Catalina, knowing that there were issues with Office, but also upgraded to the new Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint believing this would allow me to open docs and upgrade them. Now I cannot open any doc or convert them to Pages as suggested above. I will try to call Microsoft support as soon as I have a couple of hours during office hours but any other suggestions meanwhile would be appreciated.

I also upgraded to Catalina and upgraded to newest version of office 365. Still cannot open any excel or word docs. Also have tried drag and drop to numbers and Pages with no success. I need access to these documents. Any help appreciated. 2ff7e9595c
